School trips and allergies
Planning visits and trips for pupils with allergies, in line with your allergy safety policy and the DfE guidance.
The DfE policy template asks schools to set out how pupils with allergies take part in visits and trips safely, with risk assessments for pupils at risk of anaphylaxis, pupils taking their own adrenaline devices, and trained staff attending.
Before the trip
- Complete a risk assessment that covers each pupil at risk of anaphylaxis
- Check food arrangements with the venue and any transport stops
- Talk to parents about anything unusual about the trip
- Make sure accompanying staff are trained and know each pupil's plan
On the day
- Each pupil's own adrenaline devices go with them, and are checked before departure
- Take copies of each pupil's Allergy Action Plan and emergency contacts
- Agree who calls 999 and where the nearest help is
- Bring the devices back and return them to their usual place
How Allergy Ledger helps
Trip mode lists the pupils on the trip, the pens to take and a pre-departure checklist, and emergency mode works with no signal.
Official sources
Allergy Ledger helps your school record and follow its own allergy procedures. It does not give medical advice and does not replace staff training, the pupil's Allergy Action Plan or Individual Healthcare Plan, or the advice of a healthcare professional. In an emergency always follow the pupil's plan and call 999. Emergency steps shown in the app are reproduced from official UK government guidance. Information is only as accurate as what your school and parents enter.
